Carpet Odor Removal & Pet Urine Treatment
Surface cleaning hides odors for a few days. Real odor removal eliminates the source — and that requires enzyme chemistry, deep extraction, and sometimes treatment all the way down to the subfloor. Ajax Carpet Service has been solving the hardest pet, smoke, and mildew odor problems in Northwest Indiana since 1978.
Pet urine is more than a smell problem
Dog and cat urine soaks through carpet fibers into the pad and often into the subfloor underneath. As it dries, the urea breaks down into ammonia and bacteria that re-activate every time the humidity rises — which is why pet odor comes back stronger in summer and on rainy days. We use a UV light to find every contaminated spot (even ones the dog hid behind furniture), measure how deep the damage goes, and treat with enzyme chemistry that breaks down the proteins instead of just masking them.
Smoke, mildew, and musty basements
Cigarette and cigar residue, kitchen fire smoke, basement mildew, and the general musty smell that builds up after a slow water leak all respond to the same basic process: identify the source, treat the materials chemically, then extract everything out and dry aggressively. We use hydroxyl and ozone-style enzyme treatments depending on the contamination, and we never just spray a deodorizer on top of an active problem.
When the pad or subfloor needs treatment
If the contamination has reached the pad or subfloor — common with old or repeated pet accidents — surface cleaning alone will never fix it. We can pull the carpet back, treat the pad and subfloor directly with sealants and enzymes, install fresh pad in the affected area, and re-lay the carpet. It is more involved than a standard cleaning, but it is the only way to make some odors actually leave. We will tell you up front which approach your situation needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really remove pet urine smell, or just cover it?
We remove it. Enzymes break down the urea proteins that cause the smell. We do not mask with perfume or fragrance — if the odor would have come back, the enzyme treatment did not work and we will tell you what the next step is.
Will the smell come back in humid weather?
Not if the source was fully treated. Re-occurring odor in humid conditions almost always means the pad or subfloor still has contamination that needs deeper treatment.
Is enzyme treatment safe for kids and pets?
Yes. The enzymes are non-toxic and dry to a neutral residue. We always recommend keeping pets off the treated area until it is fully dry.
How do you find every accident spot?
We use a UV blacklight in a darkened room. Urine fluoresces yellow-green, which lets us treat spots you cannot see in daylight — usually the hidden corners and behind-the-couch areas pets actually use.
